Overview

Understanding the ball valve

A ball valve uses a bored ball that rotates 90° to open or close the line. It gives fast operation, low pressure drop in full-bore form and dependable shut-off, which is why it is one of the most widely used isolation valves.

Choosing between floating and trunnion construction, soft or metal seats, and full or reduced bore depends on line size, pressure, temperature and the fluid. SIYA reviews these points with you before sourcing.

Common ball valves designs

These are general valve-family descriptions, not a statement that every configuration is available. The selected supplier and design are confirmed for each quotation.

Common designs and typical selection context
DesignDescriptionTypical context
Floating ball, 2-pieceEconomical; common for smaller sizes and moderate pressureUtility, water, air, general process
Floating ball, 3-pieceBody can be opened for seat and seal maintenance without removing the lineChemical, food, frequent service
Trunnion-mountedBall supported by trunnions; lower operating torque at larger sizes and higher pressurePipelines, oil & gas, large bore
Top-entryInternals serviced from the top while the valve stays in lineHydrocarbon and critical lines
Metal-seatedFor high temperature, abrasive or erosive serviceSteam, slurry, catalyst

Technical selection

Specifications confirmed to order

No model-specific size, pressure, temperature, materials, certificates or standards are guaranteed by this page. The exact specification is checked against the selected supplier's datasheet and confirmed in writing before supply.

Size, pressure & temperature
Confirm operating conditions and design envelope for the selected model.
Body, trim & soft parts
Match the process fluid, temperature and compatibility requirements.
Ends & installation
Specify connection type, facing, drilling and applicable piping standard.
Operation & accessories
Confirm manual or actuated operation, control signal and accessories.
Standards & testing
Confirm the applicable design, inspection and test requirements for the order.
Documents & traceability
State certificate and documentation requirements in the enquiry.

Please do not select a valve from a general web description alone. SIYA will confirm the offered make, model, datasheet and deviations with the quotation.

Where they are used

Typical applications

  • Oil & gas pipelines and tank farms
  • Chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Water, utility and compressed-air lines
  • Skids and packaged equipment
  • Steam and thermal-oil (metal-seated)
  • General industrial isolation

Selection checklist

What to specify

  • Fluid, temperature and maximum pressure
  • Full bore or reduced bore requirement
  • Soft-seat limits vs. metal-seat need
  • Fire-safe, anti-static or cryogenic requirement
  • Manual, gear-operated or automated
  • Required test standard and certificates (e.g. EN 10204 3.1)
