When Should an Industrial Valve Be Repaired or Replaced?

A structured starting point for a maintenance discussion—not a substitute for a qualified inspection or safe isolation procedure.

Begin with safety and the failure mode

Leakage, abnormal operating torque, corrosion, vibration, damage or inconsistent operation should be assessed by qualified personnel. Follow the plant's approved isolation, depressurisation and safety procedures; never remove or dismantle a valve while it may contain hazardous pressure or media.

Questions to review with a service provider

  • What is the symptom, and when does it occur?
  • What are the valve make, model, size, material and pressure class, if known?
  • What fluid, pressure, temperature and cycle frequency does it see?
  • Can wear parts, seats, seals, trim or actuator components be identified and sourced?
  • Is the body or a pressure-containing part damaged, or outside acceptable limits?
  • What inspection, repair procedure, testing and documentation will be needed after the work?

Compare repair and replacement scope

A repair may be suitable when the valve design is identifiable, key components are acceptable, suitable parts and service capability are available, and the required inspection and testing can be completed. Replacement may be more appropriate where integrity cannot be established, parts are unavailable, the duty has changed or risk and lifecycle cost favour a new valve.

The decision must be based on inspection, service conditions, plant requirements and applicable standards. An online description or photo alone cannot determine whether a valve is safe to return to service.

For a useful first review: share the nameplate or datasheet, symptoms, service conditions, quantity, site location and any required date. Do not send confidential documents unless you are authorised to share them.
