Selection basics

Ball Valve vs Butterfly Valve

Both are quarter-turn valve families, but their constructions, installation requirements and selection trade-offs differ.

How the designs differ

A ball valve uses a bored ball that rotates to open or close the flow path. A butterfly valve rotates a disc within the body. Actual performance depends on the design, materials, dimensions, seat system and operating conditions.

Typical considerations

Ball valves

  • Often considered when a full-bore or reduced-bore choice, quarter-turn operation, or a particular seat and shut-off configuration is required.
  • Common options include floating or trunnion-mounted designs, with model-specific pressure-temperature limits and seat materials.
  • Body dimensions, weight, torque and maintenance needs vary by size and selected model.

Butterfly valves

  • Often considered for larger lines where short face-to-face dimensions and lower valve weight may be useful.
  • Designs include wafer, lug and flanged bodies, plus resilient-seated and high-performance constructions.
  • The disc remains in the flow path; seat, disc, pressure drop and shut-off details depend on the selected design.

How to choose responsibly

Compare line size, fluid, pressure and temperature, required shut-off, acceptable pressure drop, installation space, connection standard, operating frequency and maintenance plan. If automated, confirm actuator torque, power or air supply, controls and any required fail action.

Do not select by valve type or price alone. The project datasheet and the offered manufacturer's information should establish suitability for the service.
